10 fantastic ways to save your Android battery life

If you were following tech news earlier this year, you probably noticed an unexpected development: Nokia re-released its popular non-smart 3310 mobile phone. Famous for having a battery that lasted for days - or even weeks depending on usage - the original phone was much loved and the latest 2G model sold out right away.   One of the main reasons people went for this old classic was its dependable battery life. If you weren’t lucky enough to snap one up, or are still quite attached to your touchscreen, here are 10 tips that will help you squeeze the most out of your battery so you can keep using your Android smartphone as long as possible.

1. Diagnosis: Look at your battery usage

When you’re sick, every good doctor wants to know the cause of your symptoms. Likewise, if your phone battery is running out faster than expected, it’s extremely helpful to have a diagnosis. Tap on Settings, Battery (or Battery Usage) and you’ll be presented with a breakdown of everything that’s happening on your device. 

 

The screen often takes up a lot of battery life (see point #2), but you’ll also see apps running in the background, updates, emails, calls vibration, and more - all slowly chipping away at your power reserves.

 

Once you know what’s going on, you can begin to cure it!

 

2. Power saving mode

 

Your next port of call should be Power Saving mode. It will make sure your Android phone is operating efficiently and not splurging power unnecessarily.

 

As in the previous tip, head to the Battery screen in Settings and select Power saving mode.

 

Over time you’ll certainly see an improvement in average battery life.

 

 

3. Bright Screens: Turn the power down

 

The brighter your screen, the more power it saps. While your phone will automate this for the most part (through the Adaptive Brightness option), it’s still easy to reduce your battery usage if you turn down the brightness. 

 

Do this by dragging your finger down from the top of your device to unveil the brightness slider. Alternatively, go to Settings / Sound & Display. Then select Brightness. Pull the slider to the left and see your battery life increase - it might buy you a few valuable extra minutes with your phone before it conks out for the night.

 

4. Turn off Bluetooth

 

Unless you’re currently using hands-free earphones, or your streaming music to your car stereo, you probably don’t need bluetooth enabled. Although this won’t make a huge difference to your phone battery - all these little changes add up to a big difference.

 

Drag your finger down from the top of the screen and deselect the bluetooth icon. Et voila! You’ll pick up a few power percentage points.

 

5. Time out length

 

The longer your screen stays active, the more battery juice it drinks. To maximise your phone’s idle-time, and ensure that you’re not using power for no good reason, you can adapt your timeout settings.

 

Go to Settings / Display / Screen Timeout

 

Ensure that it is set to the shortest timeout length possible.

 

6. Turn off vibrate mode

 

 

How many times does your phone vibrate in an hour? In a day? Whenever you receive a call or a message, it’ll buzz. Even when you type or tap, you will often receive haptic feedback in the form of small vibrations. Whenever your phone does this, it engages a tiny motor, and the motor takes away power that could be used elsewhere. 

 

Drag your finger down from the top of the screen and select the “sound only” or “mute” modes (these will be named differently, depending on your Android operating system). Sound takes less power than vibrations. But only choose silent if you are unable to answer your calls or messages - or you’ll spend the day ignoring important calls. Actually, that sounds like heaven.

 

7. Uninstall apps you’re not using anymore

 

We often download apps out of curiosity, use them once of twice and then leave them to hangout, unloved and unused. The problem is, these apps often run in the background, fetch updates, and use battery power for no reason at all. 

 

Open Settings / Apps or Applications / Downloads Then tap on the app or apps in your list and choose Uninstall.

8. Deselect location services 

 

While it’s less power hungry than it used to be, Location Services still use power. If you don’t need it right now, you can deselect it by dragging your finger from the top of the screen and tapping the correct option.

 

Of course, if you’re in a jam and lost in the big city, you can always re-engage it to find out where you are. 

 

9. Delete old widgets

 

Widgets can be super helpful at times, but they are also often surplus to our requirements. What’s more, they sometimes take up more battery than we expect because they are always requesting updates from the parent app.

 

To remove a widget simply tap and hold, then drag it to the trash icon at the bottom of the screen.

 

10. Turn off notifications

 

It’s nice to know what’s going on, but when your smartphone constantly, pings, vibrates and jiggles, you can be sure it’s draining your battery. Turn off notifications via  Settings / Apps

 

Go down the list and deselect “Show Notifications” wherever you think it’s unnecessary.
